Find a specific item

When you finish, the Details Panel shows only the items that match what you asked for.

The controls sit above the Details Panel in every Scan result: the Search within results box, the Sort control with its direction button, and the Filters button. They narrow the list; the map keeps showing the folder in focus.

Search by name

1. Type in Search within results. After a short pause the Details Panel lists the items under the folder in focus whose names contain what you typed. Capitalisation and spaces at either end do not matter.
2. Press Enter to run the search at once instead of waiting.
3. Press Escape, or choose Clear search, to clear it. The full list comes back.

A search reaches into Smaller Items, so a small file you know the name of turns up even when the map has folded it into the translucent group. Drilling into another folder clears the search.

Sort

Choose Sort to order the list by Size, Name, Type, or Modified. The button beside it reverses the order: Largest or latest first, or Smallest or earliest first. The sort stays as you Drill.

The default is largest first by Size on Disk, which is the order the Disk Map draws. See What the sizes mean for what that measure counts.

Filter

Choose Filters to combine three kinds of narrowing:

• Kind: Files and folders, Folders, Files, Images, Audio, Videos, Documents, Archives, or Other files.
• Size: Any size, or At least 10 MB, At least 100 MB, At least 1 GB, or At least 10 GB.
• Age: Any age, or Older than 30 days, Older than 6 months, or Older than 1 year.

The filters apply together, so Videos that are At least 1 GB and Older than 1 year is one list.

When nothing matches

The Details Panel says so rather than showing an empty space: No items match your search term, No items match the current filters, or, with nothing narrowing the list, This folder is empty. Clear the search with Escape, or relax the filters, and the items come back.

If an item you expected is still missing, it may be inside a Restricted area the Scan could not read, or on a branch marked Stale. See Fix scanning and results problems.

Once you have found the item, inspect it before deciding anything, or go back to reading the Disk Map around it.
