PoppyDisk User Guide
Data and network

What PoppyDisk sends and stores

Exactly what leaves the machine and what is written to disk.

When you finish, you know exactly what leaves your PC, under what conditions, and what PoppyDisk saves on it.

Your Drive stays on your PC

Scanning, the hierarchy, Size on Disk accounting, Risk grading, inspection, previews, and deletion all run on the device. No Drive scan, file content, file name, folder name, or local path is sent anywhere, in any mode, whatever you choose below.

The connections PoppyDisk makes

  • None in the Scan Tier. Until you enter a License Key, PoppyDisk itself makes no network connection.
  • Polar, after you unlock. Entering a License Key contacts Polar to record this PC as an activation, and PoppyDisk checks the key with Polar again every seven days. See Keep the Clean Tier working.
  • Product Analytics and Diagnostics, only if you agree. Two optional, separate purposes, described below. Both stay off until you agree, and refusing or withdrawing either does not limit scanning, cleanup, downloads, checkout, or licensing.

Privacy choices

The first time PoppyDisk opens it asks for your Privacy choices. You can reject both purposes, accept both, or Customize them one at a time and Save choices. The same dialog is available later from the title bar: choose More options, then Privacy choices. Either choice can be withdrawn at any time.

  • Product Analytics records app interactions, navigation, performance, heatmaps, and a fully masked session replay, processed by PostHog in its EU Cloud. It uses a random app identifier, never your name or email.
  • Diagnostics records errors, stack traces, recent breadcrumbs, runtime context, and sampled performance traces, processed by Sentry in its Germany region.

Drive scans, file contents, file names, local paths, License Keys, and form values are filtered out of both. Withdrawing a purpose stops its future collection and clears its pending local state; it does not automatically locate events already collected. The full detail, including retention periods, providers, and your rights, is in the privacy notice, which the dialog's Full privacy notice button also opens. Questions and data requests go to privacy@poppydisk.com.

What PoppyDisk saves on this PC

  • Scan results, so a Drive's last result opens without scanning again. Forget results on the Drive Overview removes them.
  • Pinned Folders, the paths you chose to keep on the overview.
  • The Cleanup Basket, the paths you collected, so the basket survives a restart. Only paths, never file contents.
  • View preferences, such as the Details Panel width and whether you last used the Map or the Tree.
  • license.json, once you unlock: the License Key and this PC's activation id.
  • Your Privacy choices, one consent record in PoppyDisk's preferences.

Demo Mode keeps all of this in memory and writes nothing.

Administrator access

PoppyDisk never runs elevated itself. When you agree to measure Restricted areas, a separate helper is started for that one job, communicates with the app over a channel limited to your account, Administrators, and SYSTEM, and can only measure. See How administrator access works.

Check it yourself

Demo Mode runs the whole interface on synthetic data and touches no real file, so you can see every screen before pointing PoppyDisk at your own Drive. See Take a tour in Demo Mode.
